New Chabad in historic Ottawa building offers a home to decades-old Jewish library

The opening of a new Chabad building in Ottawa has brought almost 15,000 library books back to the capital’s Jewish community after they spent nearly a decade in storage. Chabad of Wellington West was founded in 2022 by Ottawa-born Rabbi Moshe Caytak and his wife, Sheina Caytak, when they moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ottawa with their three-month-old son. The couple co-directed the centre in their home for several years, inviting some of the neighbourhood’s 600 Jewish households to Shabbat and holiday dinners. Rabbi Caytak says they’ve raised around $1.7 million to open the new centre.

Chabad of Hewlett to celebrate growth at gala in new building

Unlike many organizations that host annual fundraising dinners, Rabbi Nochem Tenenboim said Chabad of Hewlett only holds gala celebrations when the community reaches a significant new stage of growth. “We’ve had only 8 gala dinners over the years, each one representing another step forward, another commitment to grow stronger, bigger and do even more for the community."
Old Hammond Highway house that survived fire to become Jewish Cultural Center

A house on Old Hammond Highway that was damaged by fire will have a new future as the Jewish Cultural Center, said the leaders of the nonprofit that acquired it. Chabad at LSU and Greater Baton Rouge has a mission “to strengthen Jewish pride, knowledge and celebration,” said Rabbi Peretz Kazen, who has been serving as its director along with his wife, Mushka Kazen, since 2015. The religious, educational, social and recreational programming the nonprofit offers for the community at large is held now in rental space around Baton Rouge, Kazen said.

Bakersfield Chabad to host pop-up Jewish deli on Sunday

The Chabad of Bakersfield will be hosting a pop-up Jewish deli for this weekend only. The pop-up deli, which will include food items like knishes, chicken Matzo Ball soup and Dr. Brown sodas, will be hosted on Sunday, June 7, beginning at 4 p.m., at the Chabad Jewish Community Center, located at 6901 Ming Ave. The deli will be taking pre-orders only but will have both outdoor and indoor dining available for patrons. The funds raise through the pop-up deli will go toward supporting educational programming at the Central Valley Holocaust Memorial.
El Al Flight Diverted After Passenger Gives Birth Mid-Journey

The young Jewish couple from New Jersey had received the necessary medical approvals before boarding the flight, according to Chabad.org. But while the plane was in the air, the woman began experiencing active labor, forcing the crew to divert the flight and make an emergency landing in Rome. After the plane landed in Italy, the mother was rushed to a local hospital, while her husband suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar city, without basic supplies, with much of their luggage still on the plane that continued to Israel.
Friendship Circle of Cleveland opens its doors to valley and beyond

Housed in a former church-turned-synagogue at 27900 Gates Mills Blvd. in Pepper Pike, Friendship Circle draws clientele of all ages. Friendship Circle of Cleveland was founded in 2003 by Rabbi Yossi Marozov and his wife, Estie Marozov. The organization, affiliated with the Chabad Hasidic movement, started as a grassroots initiative matching children with developmental disabilities with teen volunteers. They have established a safe place with programs for people of all ages with special social needs, ranging from Sunday Circle, after-school and summer and winter camps, tutoring and more.
